Ridge Racer 6 Review
Ridge Racer 6 for the Xbox 360 is the true definition of an arcade game, and fans of the series are likely to appreciate this. Despite the fact that the title is appearing on the 360, it retains many of the qualities which made is popular back on the the Playstation. Despite this, those that enjoy simulation racing games will be annoyed by the lack of realism. There have been many ridge racer 6 cars and achievements in this game.
The cars have a tendency to gravitate around corners while moving at very high speeds. Few licensed cars are featured, and this is another factor which adds to the lack of realistic racing. Add to this the fact that you don't race in real world locations, and you have a racing game which arguably has some serious flaws. Most racing games today allow you to customize your car, race in real world locations, and drive licensed vehicles. If you are just looking for a racing game with a lot of speed and gorgeous graphics, Ridge Racer 6 is for you.
The series is well known for cars which drift around corners, and little has changed with the latest release. It is especially evident on the PSP versions. When you turn corners at high speeds and lose control of your car, you can release the gas and your car will begin moving with the turn. To stop the car from sliding all you have to do is steer away from the turn and push your car forward. This is not realistic, and will not be found in any quality racing simulation games. Because of this there is little need for the brakes.
While drifting your car has always been a part of the Ridge Racer series, it appears they took it a bit too far with Ridge Racer 6. Your nitrous meter will increase, and this is a new addition to the series. Though the nitrous meter has many benefits, it can also be annoying as well. Three levels of nitrous were added, and the first level is slow. You will have to move up to the third nitrous level just to get the burst of speed you will see in other racing games.
When it comes to the racing competitions in the game, you may feel more like you're racing the clock instead of other cars. Your opponents won't try to cut in front of you in order to stop you from passing. They don't attempt to bottle up the other cars in order to get ahead. It seems that the most important factor in winning races is driving fast and staying away from walls. If you are looking for a more realistic racing game, look at Project Gotham 3.
